James Joyce

Artist Statement

In my night work I seek to make photographs through a painterly vocabulary. Vibrancy of color, expressive and linear line work, and chaotic or absurd scenes dominate the work. While making my photographs I visit galleries showing work by painters and people who draw rather than people who use photography as their expressive outlet. It is important that my work is informed by a variety of different “types” of artists. My other focus in picture making is similar to the night work in the sense that I am looking for the absurd or curious bits in our world. In this body of work text is used to illustrate an idea or concept. A cutesy white child made of wood advertises ice cream and hunting. A house hides behind tarps held up by trees and rope that remind you of karma. The reeds in the sinister area know, see, and hear all. These environments are telling us something about our culture and the way we live. These photographs are meant to seduce you into paying attention. Maybe someday we can know, see, and hear all like the reeds do.
